From Classrooms to Cultures: Hospitality Alumni Reflect on Their Exchange Experience
Leaving home for a semester abroad is more than just a change of scenery鈥攊t鈥檚 a journey of self-discovery, cultural immersion, and academic growth. Four alumni from the School of Hospitality and Service Management (SHSM) took the leap into the unknown, embarking on exchange programs across France, South Korea, Japan, and Macau. Through new friendships, language barriers, and unique classroom experiences, they returned with more than just memories鈥攖hey gained perspectives that would shape their future careers and personal growth.
Kok Wen Si 鈥 Hospitality Management
Visited Burgundy School of Business, France
鈥淟ooking back on my exchange program at Burgundy School of Business (BSB) in Dijon, I can honestly say it was one of the most transformative experiences of my life. One thing that really stood out to me was the study environment at BSB which was so different from what I was used to, but it was refreshing and helped me build confidence.
I also loved how interactive and team-oriented the classes were, working with peers from diverse backgrounds really opened my eyes to new perspectives.鈥
Tan Ker Yee - Events Management
Visited Dong A University, South Korea
鈥淎t first, the language barrier was challenging, especially with fast-paced conversations, but with time and practice, I became more confident. By the end of the program, I could navigate daily conversations easily.
My time in Korea expanded my worldview, taught me the value of stepping outside my comfort zone, and inspired me to seek more opportunities for cultural exchange.鈥

Visited Kansai Gaidai University, Japan
鈥淢y time at Kansai Gaidai was truly unforgettable and shaped me in so many ways, both academically and personally. I had the chance to meet incredible people from all over the world, forming deep friendships in a wonderfully international and welcoming environment. Kansai Gaidai didn鈥檛 just expand my knowledge of Japan. It gave me meaningful, hands-on experiences that I鈥檒l carry with me forever. It was a truly special time in my life, and I鈥檒l always be grateful for the opportunity.鈥

Visited Macao University of Tourism, Macau
鈥淢y experience as an exchange student at the Macau University of Tourism was wonderful. In addition to living in a different setting, I benefitted from the knowledge gained about the languages and cultures in Macau. For me, it was more than just a program; it was a journey, and I will never forget it since I got to study alongside new friends from different parts of the world.鈥
This year, from January to March, ten 糖心原创 students will embark on their own exchange journeys, gaining invaluable global exposure and new perspectives. As they immerse themselves in diverse cultures and academic environments, we look forward to sharing their experiences, insights, and unforgettable moments.
