Start Japanese: Language and Culture Essentials

Overview

This introductory course provides students with a foundation in the Japanese language through the development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Students will learn basic grammar, vocabulary, and sentence patterns for everyday communication, as well as Hiragana and Katakana. Cultural topics related to Japanese history and contemporary society are integrated into the lessons to enhance intercultural understanding. Designed for beginners, this course aims to build confidence, encourage active language use, and motivate students to continue their studies in Japanese Language 2 and 3.

On completing the course, students will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate understanding of basic vocabulary, grammar and writing system in the Japanese language
  2. Communicate with familiar everyday expressions and basic phrases in the Japanese language
  3. Present unique aspects of Japanese culture
