2021 - Helen Hofling Wins Arts & Letters鈥� 2021 Unclassifiable Contest
Helen Hofling鈥檚 series of visual poetry 鈥淎RMORY鈥� has been selected by Michael Martone
as the winner of Arts & Letters鈥� 2021 Unclassifiable Contest.
The Unclassifiable Contest is an annual contest for 鈥渦nclassifiable works: works that
blur, bend, blend, erase, or obliterate genre and other labels.鈥� 鈥淎RMORY,鈥� a series
of collage/poems/schematics that take inspiration from medieval armories, will be
published by Arts & Letters in Spring 2022.
Judge鈥檚 comments on 鈥淎RMORY鈥�: The 鈥渁uthor鈥� is dead鈥搉o news there鈥揵ut the 鈥渨riter鈥� and the writing endures. But what
does the writer do now when the writer writes with this incredible powerful typesetting
machine connected to the world wide web? Well, you do this. You begin to collapse
the categories of writer, editor, typesetter, publisher, designer, illustrator, printer.
